500+ individuals benefit from access to clean water at new campus

A child at Neema gets a bath

Many women and children in rural Kenya walk miles everyday to access water. While Neema’s new campus is still under construction, our borehole is already in use, and word has spread in the community that clean water is now accessible! Everyday, women and children from the surrounding area come to fetch water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, bathing and/or watering crops. While some still walk 30 minutes to get to Neema’s campus, they are all extremely grateful for the access to clean water “nearby.” Once our campus officially opens later this year, we estimate that 500 individuals will directly benefit from this clean water.

Thanks to the generosity of donors who made this borehole possible, those using it are getting back time. With more time to study and just be kids, children are increasing their chance of staying in school. And with more time to grow food or earn an income, women are increasing their household’s revenues. When families make more money and don’t depend on their children to collect water, fewer boys and girls drop out of school. All of this helps families break out of the cycle of extreme poverty.

"Because this water is near our home, my brother and my sister can fetch [it] in three minutes. [It] is very important to us because they help us when we are going to cook, to shower. We are so happy." -Ruth, community member

Neema’s primary goal continues to be the offering of a safe and nurturing alternative for vulnerable girls who have no choice but to drop out of school because of extreme material poverty or teen pregnancies or other vulnerabilities. And with our new campus, we’ll have the capacity to welcome TWICE as many vulnerable young women.

While the construction on the new campus continues (thanks to a generous donor’s loan), we still have 41% of our $550,000 goal left to raise. We know that empowering these young women is important to you, so while you’re reading this, will you click here and make a small donation? You can transform the life of a young woman today by providing her with healing, hope, and a path out of poverty!
